Some places in the world are blessed with the right natural environments for horseracing and Kildare in Ireland is one of those places. Home to the Curragh, a five acre area of common land which is perfect for racing and training horses, the sandy soil and natural drainage of the area plays host to a racecourse which has long been defined as the home of horseracing in Ireland.

Curragh racing is of an impeccable standard and combined with superb hospitality makes for a great day out for all. Horseracing has been staged at the Curragh for many centuries and it found its true world class level in 1866 when the Irish Derby was first staged. The course remains the home of the Derby, one of five Irish classics, the remainder of which; the Oaks, 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, and the St. Leger are also hosted at the famous course.
Indeed, of the 12 Group 1 Flat races in all of Ireland 10 are held at the Curragh. A horseshoe shaped track of 2 miles in length, races under 6 furlongs are held on the straight and with 19 racedays to attend throughout the Flat season there is plenty of scope for race fans to enjoy Curragh racing.

A part of the appeal for both keen and casual racegoers is the location of the course which is under an hour from Ireland’s capital city Dublin. On the big racedays additional buses and trains are laid on from the city centre with buses returning 30 minutes after the final race of the day.
The convenient location then draws many visitors to Ireland as well as locals and with a great social atmosphere assured in addition to some thrilling top class fixtures, Curragh racing is popular with families, groups, individuals and corporate gatherings.

Entrance fees start from just €15 and €20 for the Irish Classics. Admission to the Derby starts from €40. A day membership badge can also be purchased for €30 and this permits access into the Premier enclosure of the Grandstand where there is seating available.
These seats go quickly, especially on the big racedays and so arriving early at the course on the day is strongly recommended. Other than for Derby day, concessions are available for under 25s and senior citizens who enjoy a 50% reduction in admission.
Children attend Curragh racing for free when accompanied by an adult and for €5 on Derby day.
